2010 "Shimmer at the Edge", University of Kentucky Hospital

2009 University of Kentucky Hospital commissioned a work for the Markey Cancer Center. Below are a few steps in the process, which resulted in "Shimmer at the Edge", 6 x 9 feet.
“The Shimmer at the Edge” is about sea and sun, a place to rejuvenate. and to let the power of nature help us heal. Not just the person facing a serious illness, but their loved ones in a time of crisis.
The piece is created with textures and layers of information built up through additions and subtractions using sand, wood, metal, oil, dry pigments, and marble dust, inspired by the sea and sun, walls and wood works I encounter during my stays on the Greek island of Paros.
If my work can slow someone down to contemplate something within her or himself - if it can add a moment of focus on their inner peace in this sometimes very stressful world - then I have reached the viewer.
We, the viewer and the mark maker, would be connected through that ephemeral magic that is all around, as I am convinced that one's range of intellect is so trivial in the face of greater mysteries.
Below is the progress of the creation of the work...
